Yes, it's true: Headway PT is not a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit. Why not? A few reasons. The legal and filing costs would be a serious strain on a practice this size. As a sole-member LLC, going nonprofit would mean handing over control of the practice I built to a board and taking on the ongoing governance and compliance overhead that comes with it. It would also mean an external review process to decide which patients qualify for reduced-cost care, adding time and red tape between someone and the care they need. Right now, it just doesn't make sense. But I am a dreamer. This past year alone, I've provided over $10,000 in free or reduced-cost care. Many of these patients had recently lost a job, often because of the very disability that brought them in. I can't fix all the social forces that put care out of reach, but I can at least take down the financial barrier. Since I've opened my clinic doors, I absorbed the entire cost of my sliding scale by donating my own time. If I've been able to do all of this alone, I wondered how many more people I could help with outside support. If you believe in equitable care for everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic background, please consider a monetary gift to Headway PT. To be fully transparent: your gift is not tax-deductible, and I do have to report it as income and pay taxes on it, so not every dollar reaches patient care, but the large majority of it does. It still goes a long way. In the meantime, Headway PT is actively looking to partner with a non-profit for an official fiscal sponsorship so donations can be made tax-deductible.
